Love Song

Love Song is a story of a relationship in constant flux – where perception and deception is at constant play and where manipulation, deceit and revenge unfold. Drawing conceptually from the idea that vision and perception is altered through the camera, framing and lens, Love Song explores what we can’t see, don’t see or presume to see in a relationship when we are blinded by love.

Initially the idea began with exploring various film lenses and forced perspective to sculpt the story, however with intermittent rehearsals due to the constraints of COVID 19, the story began to emerge as the primary aspect of the project. Using the split diopter lenses, tilt shift lenses and forced perspective became a secondary consideration as it became apparent through various lens testings that to use them as the primary tool to sculpt the story felt quite naïf and even comical. The story evolving in rehearsals certainly wasn't a comedy and these rather novel lenses were implemented sparingly to enhance the story rather than to entirely shape it.

Furthermore, the use of found moments when filming such as in mirrors and reflections in glass became more interesting than warping the scale of the images with the lens. Letting go of the original planned idea and allowing the narrative to develop in rehearsals over a significant time frame, as well as finding new moments while filming is a new process in my dance film practice where story is concerned.
