Experiment 1: Splat
Screendance in form, Splat commenced as an idea employing repetition of a neutral task in different locations to investigate the making of meaning and storytelling in dance film. Avoiding movement complexity in the story, my idea was to remove the variable of any dancing from the equation. Rather, through a repeated fixed movement, the variables of location, camera framing, and edit set up a framework for the considerations of meaning making around this one repeated movement.
The movement of dropping or ‘splatting’ to the ground is executed as constant in every take. While the act of dropping might have various connotations, my idea was that if the movement was identical every take, it created a more fixed ground for critique.
